Florida Department of Transportation officials approached Leware after Contract award with a proposal to accomplish something that had never before been done in the United States: Fabricate and erect complete bridge spans over an Interstate highway using Self-Propelled-Modular-Transporter technology (SPMT). After the existing bridge spans were removed, two new 143’ spans were fabricated offsite while new foundations were constructed. These 1,600 ton units were then raised and transported 0.3 miles to be set over Interstate 4 in one night each, eliminating numerous nightly lane closures required for convention construction.
